Who we are
The Photographic Society of Sri Lanka is a non-profit organization,
run by volunteers,
that welcomes anyone interested in practising the art and craft of photography.
We offer our membership a wide variety of activities, facilities and services
including a monthly Print competition and a monthly Newsletter .
We meet regularly on the evening of the First Tuesday of every month and, as the need arises,
at other times, for various group activities such as talks/demonstrations and hands on sessions
dealing with a broad spectrum of photography related subjects.
The club gives members the opportunity to meet other people interested in the many facets of photography.
Newcomers to the hobby will benefit especially from the opportunity to interact with and learn from more
experienced members in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and also by attending the classes we conduct.
We teach photography , we arrange photo opportunities in the studio as well as outside and
every genre of photography is pursued with enthusiasm.
An important event in our calendar is our International Print Competition and Exhibition ,
an event that has been held , extremely successfully , year after year for more
than Fifty Years in unbroken succession .
Our History
The Society ,
in its present incarnation , commenced in 1935 at the residence of the Late Lionel Wendt
Lawyer, Artist, accomplished Musician, Pianist and Photographer .
However it was in December 1906 that Henry Lorenz Wendt,
Senior Judge of the Supreme Court of Ceylon and the father of Lionel Wendt,
founded the Amateur Photographic Society of Ceylon. This was a pioneering venture and the
first of its kind in the Island.
Lionel Wendt continued the work begun by his father,
together with his friends P.J.Durrant and B.G.Thornley.
Our society has been renamed twice,
Lionel Wendt named it The Photographic Society of Ceylon and subsequently, in recent years, the name was changed
again to The Photographic Society of Sri Lanka.
Today we have over 150 members and
thanks to the benevolence of the Late Lionel Wendt,
our own studio cum auditorium, darkrooms, an office and a full calender of activities...
